Klitschko says current situation in Crimea stems from policy pursued for 20 years

The policy pursued in Crimea for the last 20 years, resulted in the current situation on the peninsula, leader of UDAR Vitali Klitschko said in an interview to Channel 112.

"What has led to the current situation in Crimea? Crimeans say that the government paid no attention to them and did not allocate sufficient funds. Indeed, for 20 years of Ukraine’s independence, little has changed in Crimea; no reforms have been implemented. But the same people from Zaporizhzhya, Donetsk, Kharkov and other cities can say,” Vitali Klitschko said. “For 20 years, everything was done so that Ukraine had no reforms. Politicians were occupied with padding their own pockets. The whole system worked to wake such sentiments. Politicians, who could not offer social standards, were artificially heating them up. To distract attention they raised speculated on languages, history, religion, heroes. Today Crimea is one of the outcomes of such policy, which was being pursued in Ukraine, and - I want to emphasize - beyond Ukraine," UDAR leader said.

He also paid attention to an urgent withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Crimea to new deployment sites. The same concerns their families who are suffering from threats and pressure on the peninsula.

"Soldiers should not in any way feel abandoned. They are in a difficult situation. They keep the oath given to the people. They cannot surrender, as they will be considered deserters. They cannot abandon their places of permanent deployment. They cannot use weapons. They are in limbo. I talked to the military personnel in the Crimea over the phone, and many of them asked to give clear guidelines," Vitali Klitschko stressed.
