Klitschko: “Russia intends to disrupt presidential elections in Ukraine through destabilizing the East”

Destabilizing eastern Ukraine, Russia is trying to disrupt presidential elections in Ukraine scheduled for May 25, leader of UDAR Vitali Klitschko told the Foreign Policy magazine.

"Russia constantly says our current government is not legitimate. These elections are one way to legitimize the government and stabilize the country," Klitschko said.

He said Russia wants to achieve its goal in two ways. First, by conducting a media war on the elections. And second, by its actions on destabilizing the East of Ukraine.

"We have discovered so many Russian military experts working with the separatists and we see how he lies. He claimed he had no idea who the armed "green men" were in Crimea and then one day he said, "Oh, sorry, they were Russian soldiers after all, there to support the Russian-speaking population" UDAR leader pointed out.

Vitali Klitschko stressed that now stability and security across the region depend on the developments in Ukraine. That is why Ukraine needs political and economic assistance as well as increasing pressure of sanctions against Russia from Ukraine’s Western partners.
