Klitschko meets with Merkel, discusses reforms, visa regime liberalization, sanctions against Russia

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Luxembourg. The meeting was held at the sidelines of EPP’s political assembly, which marks party’s 40th anniversary.

“We talked about the importance of quick effective reforms in Ukraine, particularly, that there are big expectations of changes in prosecutors’ office activities. There are hopes both in Ukraine and in the West,” Klitschko said after the meeting. “We also discussed the importance of extension sanctions against Russia. Angela Merkel remarked that this is one of the most effective leverages against Russia. One cannot violate order in Europe as Russia did with its aggression in the Ukraine’s East and Crimea annexation,” Klitschko emphasized.  

He also asked German Chancellor for support in visa liberalization process between Ukraine and the EU. “We understand that we have to meet all necessary demands and criteria and show success in reforms,” he stressed.

The mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko attended celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the European People’s Party in Luxembourg. European political leaders gathered to celebrate the anniversary and discuss strategies and future prospects of the European Union. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of the European Council Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, chairman of the EPP Group in European Parliament Manfred Weber, and other European politicians are attending the celebrations.
