At a panel discussion, Klitschko asked Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy what was her opinion concerning the US involvement in the Normandy talks.
“Today we have heard the position of the Vice President of the United States and the position of the Chancellor of Germany. Everyone understands that this conflict would never happen without weapon deliveries from Russian Federation, financial support, and propaganda,” Klitschko said.
“This is a security issue of the whole Europe, as instability in Ukraine will bring about instability in the whole region. Unfortunately, we do not have any positive results so far, and every day people die there. What do you think of the United States’ joining the Normandy format?” he asked Mogherini.
The High Representative remarked that for the EU it is important to do as much as possible to implement Minsk agreements and with this in mind, some new initiatives are being elaborated.
United States involvement in the Normandy format negotiations will facilitate their effectiveness and progress in resolving the situation in Eastern Ukraine, Klitschko said in comments to journalists in Munich. "I am convinced that the US joining the talks is one of the key points. That is why I offered this at many meetings here. I am sure that taking into account the speech of the Vice President Mike Pence today at the conference, US involvement in the Normandy talks is possible,” Klitschko underlined.
At the Conference, Klitschko met with the Republican Senator John McCain, Chairman of the MSC Wolfgang Ischinger, Bayern Federal Minister for regional cooperation Beate Merk.
The mayor of Kyiv also attended the first Ukrainian Lunch at the Munich Security Conference hosted by the Yalta European Strategy.
